Thursday, November 21, 2024 (5:30 PM - 7:30 PM) (PST)
Description
On November 21, the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History will open their doors from 5:30-7:30pm to share a new documentary about the Chinese Fishing Villages of Monterey Bay. Made by Ibis Education & Media, the film utilizes historical records and photos from Museum and the City of Monterey with stories told by descendants and scholars to delve into the history of the village and the impact the residents had on Monterey and California’s fishing industries.
The documentary tells this story in all its nuances, from the start of the community to the destruction of it, highlighting the impacts the residents had on the local culture and community, and bringing their stories up to the present day with the dissolution of the controversial Feast of Lanterns parade, the official apology by the City of Pacific Grove, and the annual Walk of Remembrance instituted by village descendant Gerry Low- Sabado.
November 21 will see the official first screening of this film and allow audience members to speak with the filmmaker and educators who started the project.
