Asilomar Hosts Annual Women’s History Month Event

Saturday, March 23, 2024 (10:00 AM - 4:00 PM) (PDT)

Description

Join us for a celebration of women’s history at the Asilomar Conference Grounds, the former site of a YWCA summer camp for young women in the early 1900s. This daylong event highlights the important contributions of architect Julia Morgan, who designed the early buildings at the conference grounds as well as Hearst Castle and 700 other buildings throughout the western states and Hawaii.
At 11 AM, California State Assemblymember Dawn Addis will honor Morgan with a proclamation.
At 2 PM, historian Victoria Kastner, author of Julia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect, will give a multimedia presentation and talk titled “Julia Morgan: Her Personal Story” in the Grace Dodge Chapel Auditorium. After the talk, Kastner will be available to sign copies of her book, available for purchase on site. Ms. Kastner is available for interviews by request.
Throughout the day, visitors are invited to tour the grounds and chat with docents stationed at four buildings. In addition, the Horseless Carriage Club of America, Salinas Chapter, will offer rides in their early 1900s-era automobiles, which are similar to the cars used to teach young YWCA members to drive at Asilomar. Period attire is encouraged!
